Completely O/T: New Wolverhampton station

A great tunnel as well! It's interesting to see everything about the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers, and then as you say, you are led right to the stadium at the end of the tunnel! A good ground too, would love to watch a game there one day

I would settle for a game just about anywhere! Can I come too, Uncle Bob?

In the late 60s I was a regular at the old Molineux thanks to Mum & Dad driving me in from Shrewsbury, where we lived at the time. We used to park in the old cattle market (long gone), Mum would beetle off to attack the newly opened Mander and Wulfrun shopping centres while me and Dad headed to a Molineux that was nothing like today's stadium. We used to stand in the enclosure in front of the old main stand, me at the front with Dad keeping a watchful eye a few steps back.

Some memories ...
- Wolves were 2-0 up over Man Utd, but Bobby Charlton and George Best both scored so it ended 2-2. Over 44,000 were in that day. The most important thing being when the ball went out for a throw and landed at my feet. I handed it back to none other than, gasp, Bobby Charlton, who thanked me. According to my Mum I didn't wash my hands for weeks afterwards.
- Very satisfyingly tonking Chelsea 3-0. Dave Wagstaff scored a cracker, cutting in from the right wing and banging it past Peter Bonetti from distance.
- A near riot when Derek Dougan was sent off against Everton. We lost 3-2 and there was near insurrection in the stands. Plenty of atmosphere, to say the least!
- Dougan (again) and Jackie Charlton of Leeds United kicking lumps out of each other (they didn't get on). That was also the game when thousands of Leeds fans did the non-league thing of changing ends at half time - walking straight across the middle of the pitch from the South Bank to the North Bank. Yikes!
- I couldn't go to Peter Knowles's last match before he gave up the game to be a preacher (a 3-3 at home to Forest I think?). So we went to his penultimate game instead, where we beat Spurs 1-0 in a League Cup tie. 34,000 in that night.
I also remember a dull game against Sunderland, only memorable for the fact that Molineux was covered in snow. The lines had been swept and, er, that was it. Plenty of white stuff flying around! 17,000 in that day.

Here are two goals from the 3-2 defeat against Everton. Not goalie Phil Parkes's finest hour so unsurprising he lost his place to Alan Boswell.



And a confession. I know my Mum looks at this forum (she likes to keep an eye on me - hello Mum!)
When Wolves were away I was allowed to go with my mates to watch Shrewsbury - no parental supervision in those days, we each had enough money for admission: 3 shillings (£0.15) plus sixpence for a bag of chips from the chippy outside Gay Meadow to sustain us on the way home. Well, one day, I knew my mates couldn't go to the game, but, aged 9, I told my parents a porky and off I went to the game alone, a 3 mile walk to the ground and back. If memory serves, it was a 1-1 draw with Fulham, or it might have been Luton. Either way, Malcolm McDonald was playing. I wonder what became of him?

If I still lived in Shrewsbury their current ground is now an easy stroll from my (former) front door.
