Well, I enjoyed that game Tom, even if you and your Dad didn't!!
Nice ground Walsall, superbly appointed facilities, and a very friendly Club. Could, quite happily go there every week, if it wasn't so close to the 'hallowed' mecca that is!!
Need to be five or six rows back though to see the game. Lower rows should be declared restricted view!! Police, Stewards, ball boys, supporters constantly back and forth, fifteen minutes before half time and fifteen afterwards the game is almost unwatchable!!
Nigel, we must have been within reach at that Utd game!! I was there as well!!, in the paddock in front of the main stand, with my mates!! I remember looking in awe at the huge packed South stand Hotel end, fantastic.
My favourite story re The Doog though was a Wolves game away to Burnley!
Now one of the regulars the at my Club in Guildford was a man called Malcolm Sinclair, a Football League Referee, and we all had many discussions with him about his games.
My mates and I had decided some time back that we would visit Turf Moor next time Wolves were there, and by a strange quirk of fate we found out that Malcolm was officiating for that game.
We offered him a lift up, but he declined, saying that he had to be there on the Friday night, in case of early inspection, but he gladly accepted a lift back, and gave us his pass for the players exit.
Burnley battered Wolves and were leading 2-1 with a few minutes to go. On comes the Doog to howls of from the locals!! Not the most popular bloke around was he?!!
Last minute, through ball to, Doog probably five yards off side at least, no flag, rounds the keeper and slots home!!!!
Runs past the HOME end with arms flaying, and all hell lets loose!! 2-2 and home.
Hide the scarves, and slope of to the car. Wait a few minutes and drive round to the players exit!! Steward tells us to **** off, we did have scarves and things hanging out, which was a bit iffy, but we were explaining to him why we were there, and showed the pass, he wouldn't believe us of course, just as Malcolm came out, and jumped in the car!!
Malcolm called us all the names under the sun, with a huge laugh, BUT we were spotted by some locals who came running after us, obviously wanting to wish us a safe journey home!!.
Motorbike copper spotted us as well and just yelled follow me, and we had the fastest get out of town ever!!!!
Happy days! Things you do when you are young eh. Cost us a few beers for Malcolm though.
