The passing of another of the worlds great players was announced tonight. Franz Beckenbauer passed away at home in Germany at the age of 78.
'The Kaizer' as he was known was Captain of Germany in the 1966 final, and then became Manager of German football for so many years.
A supreme, elegant, and strong leader, a carbon copy of our own Bobby Moore, and I had the lucky honour to watch both of them in action at the 1966 final. Still have the Final programme and match tickets locked away.
Moore, Pele, Charlton, and now Beckenbauer, four greats that will never be bettered!

1966, so 57 years ago, a 21 year-old played in a World Cup final, so young, and he rapidly became one of the very best of his generation.
Pretty much every team aspiring to be the very best these days would love to have a Beckenbauer, apart, maybe, from Man City, who seem to have found another way by fielding so many inside forwards it's difficult to keep track of them all! But City have a Beckenbauer-type too in Rodri and aren't the same when he's not on the field ...
A truly exceptional footballer, one of the greats. RIP.

Beautifully put Nigel. A true great of the game. Right up there with Sir Bobby. The pair of them would walk into a World XI.
