If this statement ever was true, is it true today given even Aldershot and Woking appear to have accepted their lot?

That was around my time with the city then Nigel, I was 13 and City were one of the top non league sides in the country.
I have a book published a few years ago of the City history, when the Manager at the time was bemoaning a disappointing attendance for a Good Friday v Merthyr, of just over 4000!!
They regularly topped 3000 for home games, and even the reserves in the Metropolitan League had followings of 4/500.
Many applications were made to join the Football League then, but applications were voted, and compared to the Clubs already in the League, by the Division 4 Clubs themselves, and turkeys don't vote for Christmas do they?
According to the book I mentioned City did apply in the 1930's but lost the election vote to Aldershot by 1 vote!! and that was because Aldershot had a huge military presence which could/would command even higher attendances than city!!
The demise of City in the 70's was tragic and, to many, brought the rise of Woking FC as supporters looked for an alternative source for their leisure time.
That's one of the reasons I struggle to take myself to Kingfield to this day, even though, for a short time, I went out with a girl who's house looked right in to the stadium!! The romance didn't last too long!!

Just looked at that again, the picture shows their League application in 1960, when I was 13, but the attendance referred to was 1968, and I believe that game was either Newport or Brentford in the FA Cup, I will have to look it up! Pretty sure it was Brentford. We drew and lost on a very snowy covered pitch. Winning 1-0 at half time, they sent just ONE groundsman out to clear the lines!! It would have been called off these days!
We had an FA Cup tie away to Margate once, when Southern Railways put on a 'Football Special' just for City fans!! Guildford to Margate only. Never seen anything like it, a train packed with red and white. Unbelievable!

Great days Bob. I'm a couple of years behind you as I started going to Joseph's Road around 68. Great memories of the fantastic Jackie Graham banging in goals in his one season the following year.
Ironically, he joined Brentford after that and is in their Hall of Fame.

Jackie Graham!! What a little maestro he was!! A little rabbit with twinkle toes and those long flowing locks, he dazzled many an opponent. Don't forget his partner in crime, Jimmy Pearson either, what a pair they were. Two great Scots lads, and you didn't ever get involved when they went for a drink afterwards!! The bar takings were always good at the City!!
The day my Son was born, I went home to my Mum's house to give the news, and then went to the Wooden Bridge Pub. There was Jimmy...and Jake... Bob, how ya doing big man? What ya doin here? Told him the news....BIG mistake, especially when he found out I had given my lad a Scottish name!!
God knows what time I got home!!!

Bob I'm sure we had a Jackie Graham join us from Brentford in the early 80s and play a couple of games for us. It could be the same man?

Can't recall that, but I'm sure Mark Hardy will be able to confirm/deny. Jackie was a short, wiry sort of guy, with long hair, played midfield. Very skilful, and a bit of wizard with the ball.
I think Jimmy Pearson also played for Bracknell?

City folded in 74, I got married and moved to Farnborough, but was working away a lot in the Midlands (saw the Wolves regularly though), and took up refereeing locally for a while, so didn't actually start watching the Boro until my Son Andrew was old enough, mid eighties, so may well have missed Jackie if he did play here.
