Unpopular opinion in coming but I am interested to see if anyone else agrees.
I am very much not in favour of the Ted Pearce Memorial Cup being the nearest league game in the new year. It was ok first time around as we won and they could make a thing of it, but on Monday we lost to a team who were bottom, less than a week after we'd beaten them, and I would wager the majority of our fans and none of the H&W fans remembered, knew about it or cared.
I said at the time I didn't think it was an appropriate way of celebrating and remembering the greatest manager this club has ever known and I stand by it. A proper pre-season game, with the emphasis purely on Ted and it not being important in any other way what the result is.
That picture of a pissed off Robbo and their captain was awkward and not a fitting tribute in what was only the second fixture for this cup.
Not a fitting memorial at all.

Can't disagree with you there, although the day didn't pan out as planned, and I'm not talking about the result. When the trophy went down to the pitch before the match for the photo session, I wrongly assumed that Havant had been briefed about what would happen if they won, or drew, which was to be a presentation and photos with the whole team (both teams if drawn) by former manager Alan Taylor. Unfortunately, it seemed that Havant couldn't get off the pitch qulck enough, i'm not blaming them, they obviously weren't briefed accordingly. I did have a chat with Garry Ward after the match, who was a personal friend of Ted's, and host's his family on the day, about whether we had done him justice this year. Obviously the date of the match was chosen as close to the anniversary of his passing as possible so we could remember him for many years to come. I will get Garry to speak to his family to get their opinion, but if we continue with the festive match, I can assure you the visiting team will be briefed better.

I'd far prefer it if a League game is not labelled as Ted's Memorial Cup. League games are about winning points; anything else is of secondary interest to the players and many supporters.
It ought to be the most attractive home pre-season friendly in my view, with the oppo (and their fans) briefed accordingly.
Ted was about fielding sides that played high quality passing football to win football matches and, rightly, was very well respected by managers such as Harry Redknapp and Alan Ball. So a PSF against any of Southampton, Pompey or Bournemouth would fit, and, at a lower level, the likes of Woking and Basingstoke would work too (particularly Woking).

Without trying to blame anyone or excuse anyone of not caring, it would appear several people forgot about it, and I think that's somewhat understandable as it's a league game, we're expecting a bumper crowd, other things on people's minds. Not least the team, players etc. That's why I think a dedicated preseason game would be great. It doesn't have to be close to the date of his passing but I understand why it was chosen like that last year. That way Ted would be the main focus rather than an important league game.
