Some interesting numbers comparing our performances when Alfie Pavey was here and after his departure. Obviously the midfield was being rejigged at much the same time, so it's not just down to the Pavey effect.
Clearly the approach has changed - we're scoring a lot more, ditto conceding. The goals are also being shared around now, making it far more difficult for the oppo to read us.
When Pavey was here we did ok if the then painfully slow midfield found him in a dangerous position, but our play was so focused on him others rarely got a look in. That said, the ponderous midfield did do a decent job screening our defence.
We're far more dynamic and inventive now, but at the expense of leaving our defence exposed far too often.
Is there a happy medium that will improve our results?
The stats with Pavey: 10 League games 14 goals for (1.4/game) 14 goals against (1.4/game) 3 wins 4 draws 3 defeats 13 points (1.3/game) Scorers: Pavey 8, Cullen 2, Holmes 2, Maloney, Upward (70% scored by recognised strikers)
After Pavey: 11 League games 23 goals for (2.1/game) 21 goals against (1.9/game) 4 wins 4 draws 3 defeats 16 points (1.5/game) Scorers: Pendlebury 5, Folivi 3, Hall 3, Kuhl 2, Maloney 2, Saied 2, Cullen, Fearn, Gifford, Holmes, Robinson, Own goal (35% scored by recognised strikers)

For a change having a good forward in Pavey he had a team built to play to his strengths and it worked, which was highly unusual as with forwards under Spencer we have tended to be ‘round peg square hole’ and squandered their strengths.
To transition from the very one-dimensional play we had to the formation/ team makeup with no realistic downturn over the same time is a definite result and credit to the coaching in achieving this.
I do feel sorry for Pavey though as he looks to have been ‘sold a pup’ with his Woeking move. I hope for him it works-out although I suspect his chances will be limited this season with him being down the pecking order.

Pavey was excellent for us but as has been said already, we became a one man band and played to his strengths.
Now it is harder for the oppo to read us, which is better.
We have had a very visible upward trajectory since the beginning of the season.
Of course it was a blow losing Pavey, but we've bounced back from it very well and we've allowed ourselves, with hindsight, to understand how much of help he was, but also on the flip side, how much we were dicing with death.
I don't think it's a coincidence that we played one of our worst games of the season against Weston at home, the first game after Alfie left.
