Swindon were well drilled, coached and knew exactly how to handle us - keep a high line, condense the play so our midfield could not advance on them and play a ball through between the backs, making us resort to playing a ball over the top which they continually would intercept. As such I felt we were very poor going forward once near goal - CJ whilst may have lined-up as a striker does not have the required instinct to be making the right runs, so balls were going where he was not - he was also dropping into midfield rather than being a focal point. Sealey-Harris & Wilberforce were playing left and right of the supposed front 3 but consequently were way too far apart to be effective as a duo with CJ behind them as the formation turned into in practicality. Felt sorry for Wilberforce being subbed as he did nothing wrong, he did as instructed so just seemed to have the game pass him by by being isolated. After the subs were made, Sealey-Harris dropped back into the middle of the three but again those beyond him were playing too far in front and wide for them to be in contact with each other as an effective pairing and there was 20 yards between each of them and Sealey-Harris with a couple of players blocking/ obscuring any potential passes from him to them.
First half we had the majority of the game, hitting the post just before the break but we were already 1 down - how many times last season did we start well but not convert chances after 20 mins and have it bite us on the arse?.. No change 12 months onward it seems! Second half Swindon came at us from the start, got their second and the game was gone - the third was icing on their cake and they missed several other clear chances for more. All the chances seemed to come the same way of a quick counter with a ball over the top, us getting out muscled and Supermarine having the calmness and numbers to cut back, round the defence and Beech as well at times to have a chance at an open goal or just Beech.
Swindon just seemed to be an all round more settled squad playing as a good tight well-drilled unit as well as being fitter. We were out-muscled and out-thought all round today. Could be a very long season if we don't improve sharpish, it could also be horrendous if it is a short season especially as the league has agreed to settle things on PPG if we end-up in a lockdown once more like last season, which could send us down before the end of October if we are unlucky with how the handling of Covid is going and any consequences.
Whilst attendance today was decent and vocal, as an aside last Saturday AM Whitby Town had a call from their council slapping a prohibition order on their game for all spectators - after their oppo's fans had already left for the game which was about as popular as a fart in a space-suit - because of the Covid case rises in the town, so don't take for granted being able to watch the *next* game... The players need your support more than ever so get down to cheer them whilst you can!
